He is the creater of wendys resturant chains.  He was born in Alantic city and his parents werent married when they had him and it was the middle of the depression. when he was 5 his adoptive mother died and his father was extremely strict. Daves dad had 3 more wives after the adoptive wife that died. His father wasnt a loving man but he did what he needed to for Dave. his father started to help working on the atomic bomb in Oak Ridge. He got a job at Regus which was  a family owned resturants. He worked when he was 12 and did the night shift and went to school still. Dave wanted to show his dad he could do this and make money. He said when he was young that he would have a chain of resturants.
He quit high school at 15 and moved out to the local YMCA and became a bus boy at the local resturant. Phil Clauss was the owner of the resturant and was amazed that Dave wanted to work hard and was enjoying it unlike other young guys who just wanted to work get paid and leave. 1950 Dave joined the army and went to Germany on the occupation tour and he became a cook there but had some bad experiences with baking. In 1953 he returned to Fort Wayne Idiana and met a waiter where he worked. Dave and Lorraine were married a year later. In 1954 Dave was a vetern in the resturant business at age 22. In 6 years him and lorraine had 4 children. Soon Dave met Harland Sanders also known as Colnel Sanders and was selling his recipe for chicken but those that bought it had to pay 5 cent royalties for each piece of chicken that they sold. Dave and Colnel became good friends.Dave eventually went out and started selling the  the Kentucky fried chicken products and going around to these stores that had been set up and was the regional manager. He only knew work and didnt have time to play or enjoy family time.He sold his own Kentucky fried chicken stores back to the company and then became a millionaire. By the 1960's he was a successful millionaire but he didnt want to retire then . He had a deep love for Hamburgers. He named his company after his daughter Wendy and the logo is from his daughter too. The first Wendys was opened in Colombus Ohio.He didnt have much time for family and things like that his life was pretty much all work.In the first 6 years there were 100 Wendys then the next year there were 500.They were opening more stores then McDonalds and they were adding new things all the time.Wheres the beef was the kinda Wendys statement that put them on the map for advertising . This slogan was even used in the presidential election of 74.In the late 80's Dave started to settle down and do things he wanted to do instead of overworking. They really worked on the quality of the burgers .

Ray Kroc McDonalds

Ray Kroc was the ultimate competitor and he said about his competitors if they were drowning i would put a hose in their mouth. Ray Kroc was born in chicago in 1902. In 1905 they moved to oakpark a suburb of chicago. His mother was very enthusiastic about cleaning and as a child Ray helped his mother and seemed more ambitious then other kids. His first business was a lemonade stand he also worked at a grocery store and working at his uncles store using the soda machine. He didnt studie much he was more into making new businesses and any idea he had he had a way to make it come true. He felt school wasnt going to make him rich and he was looking for a way to get out and WWI was the way he did that he was to young to go fight but he became a red cross ambulance driver and before he could finish his training the war ended. He met Ethal Fleming when he was working at a resort on Paw Paw lake. 3 years later he wanted to marry Ethal but his dad said no not unless he had steady employment which within a few days he was selling Lily cups. He was very well dressed and groomed and sold cups to street vendors and at Rigly Stadium and then he went to the Soda fountain and sold them cups which was the best idea and showed them how the cups could be sold and they could sell drinks to go. He sold cups for 16 years and his first daughter was born in 1924. He became the multi mixers exclusive salesman in 1939. And was making about 25,000 a year which was good money. In 1954  he went to California and met Dick and Mac McDonald and they had a resturant which was called McDonalds and required 4 of the multi mixers at a time. It was originally a drive in resturant. They closed the drive in and looked to reinvent  the resturant and they made their kitchen work like a ford assembliy factory and they only had 9 items on their menu and created new things like bigger grills and condiment dispensers. They turned the service time down from 20 mins to 30 seconds.Kroc was 52 when he signed a contract with them that allowed him to use the McDonalds way but when he went home he had to buy out another company which put him severly in debt.In 1959 he opened his first McDonalds. He sold 18 franchises in the first year but was barely making back his money. A secondary business he started was where he would buy the land that McDonalds would be built on and he rented it out and it was critical that he rented these properties where he would ethier get a percent of the profits . He fell in love with another women named Joan and divorced his wife and tryed to get Joan but she wouldnt leave her husband but she wouldnt. A year later he met a women named Jane and married her two weeks later. They scouted locations by flying above the the communities and seeing churches and putting McDonalds near them and they made a manual for the resturants that everyone had to follow. He was very strict about these rules. In 1961 they opened a training station and it was called Hamburger university which taught people how to do everything. Ray started clashing with Dick and Mac and said  i want the company for myself and asked them how much it was gonna cost they said a million each and enough to pay their taxes which ended in being 2.7 million dollars in cash.Kroc didnt buy the brother resturant in the deal which made him angry and then he took them right out of business by building a McDonalds one block away . In 1971 he started selling the fillet o fish then other people started making things like the Big Mac and the Egg McMuffin. They needed someone to attract kids so they made Donald McDonald which was later changed to Ronald McDonald which was a big thing with kids in Washington DC so they spread him around America.McDonalds became the first fast food resturant on the Stock Market. He tryed to get Joan again and on March 8 1986 they got married after divorcing they're spouces.

Good to Great

Level 5 Leadership
Greatness is not a function of circumstance greatness
it turns out is largely a matter of conscious choice

level five leader is humble and fearless...
personal will and personal humilty dont settle for nothing but the best and are humble people
get the right people on the bus in the right seats and the wrong people off the bus

Confront the Brutal Facts
(yet never lose faith)
You absolutely cannot make a series of good decisions without first
confronting the brutal facts

The Stockdale Paradox
Retain Faith that you will prevail in the end regardless of the difficulties
And at the same time confront the most brutal facts of your reality whatever they may be

Dont set dates on things because if they dont happen you get discouraged
when Stockdale was in the Hinoi Hilton prison camp he said the optimists died because
they got discouraged because of saying "we will be out by next christmas" never happened
so this brought them down. So confront the brutal facts and always keep faith and think that
you will get out of your problem and never run away from them confront them head on.

The Hedgehog Concept

What are you the best at in the world
What drives your economic engine
What are you deeply passionate about
Know thyself
A hedge hog conecpt is not a goal to be the best
It is an understanding of what you can be the best at

Know one big thing and stick to it

Which is more important
the goal to be the best at something or realistic understanding
of what you can and cannot be the best at

Can each group and each person have a hedgehog concept?

My Hedge hog concept is...

Be the best fighter in the world
I am passionate about fighting and love it
the rewards and the feel of fighting drive me towards my goal
knowing that i can get rewards for something i love and enjoy.
that is my hedgehog concept.

A  Culture of Discipline

You focus on what you've accomplished relative to exactly what you said you were going to accomplish
- no matter how tough the measure
Should we have a stop doing list ?What should be on the list?

Martha Stewart

Father really pushed her as a child had to make her own clothes. She worked as a model for a little while before she went to the university of columbia then dropped out and got married became a stock broker and learnt how to create a good buisness from clients. She opened her first buisness which was catering weddings.  She has created a giant buisness that grossed over 1.7 billion dollars and had signed a 500 million dollar deal with K-Mart to sell her products.

Key Learning is don't overlook humble beginnings and if your family pushes you to succeed chances are you will succeed and do well for yourself.Try and get a good education and do the things you love otherwise why do them at all if your not going to enjoy it.

Teen Entrepreneur

Brian Wong is a 19 year old Vancouver resident that thinks the future of mobile advertisement isnt on billboards or banners  but in mobile video games.

His company Kiip has secured buisnesses such as Dr Pepper and Sony to name a few to give away prizes
who beat hard levels on video games or get the high score.

Last year he went to San Francisco for a job interview with the website Digg. He was laid off 4 months after getting the job (this was his largest failure to him so far)

This year Kiip has secured 4 million US from investment funding.
