Dave Thomas came from poverty. He is the creater of wendys resturant chains.  He was born in Alantic city and his parents werent married when they had him and it was the middle of the depression. when he was 5 his adoptive mother died and his father was extremely strict. Daves dad had 3 more wives after the adoptive wife that died. His father wasnt a loving man but he did what he needed to for Dave. his father started to help working on the atomic bomb in Oak Ridge. He got a job at Regus which was  a family owned resturants. He worked when he was 12 and did the night shift and went to school still. Dave wanted to show his dad he could do this and make money. He said when he was young that he would have a chain of resturants.
He quit high school at 15 and moved out to the local YMCA and became a bus boy at the local resturant. Phil Clauss was the owner of the resturant and was amazed that Dave wanted to work hard and was enjoying it unlike other young guys who just wanted to work get paid and leave. 1950 Dave joined the army and went to Germany on the occupation tour and he became a cook there but had some bad experiences with baking. In 1953 he returned to Fort Wayne Idiana and met a waiter where he worked. Dave and Lorraine were married a year later. In 1954 Dave was a vetern in the resturant business at age 22. In 6 years him and lorraine had 4 children. Soon Dave met Harland Sanders also known as Colnel Sanders and was selling his recipe for chicken but those that bought it had to pay 5 cent royalties for each piece of chicken that they sold. Dave and Colnel became good friends.Dave eventually went out and started selling the  the Kentucky fried chicken products and going around to these stores that had been set up and was the regional manager. He only knew work and didnt have time to play or enjoy family time.He sold his own Kentucky fried chicken stores back to the company and then became a millionaire. By the 1960's he was a successful millionaire but he didnt want to retire then . He had a deep love for Hamburgers. He named his company after his daughter Wendy and the logo is from his daughter too. The first Wendys was opened in Colombus Ohio.He didnt have much time for family and things like that his life was pretty much all work.In the first 6 years there were 100 Wendys then the next year there were 500.They were opening more stores then McDonalds and they were adding new things all the time.Wheres the beef was the kinda Wendys statement that put them on the map for advertising . This slogan was even used in the presidential election of 74.In the late 80's Dave started to settle down and do things he wanted to do instead of overworking. They really worked on the quality of the burgers .

Ray Kroc McDonalds

Ray Kroc was the ultimate competitor and he said about his competitors if they were drowning i would put a hose in their mouth. Ray Kroc was born in chicago in 1902. In 1905 they moved to oakpark a suburb of chicago. His mother was very enthusiastic about cleaning and as a child Ray helped his mother and seemed more ambitious then other kids. His first business was a lemonade stand he also worked at a grocery store and working at his uncles store using the soda machine. He didnt studie much he was more into making new businesses and any idea he had he had a way to make it come true. He felt school wasnt going to make him rich and he was looking for a way to get out and WWI was the way he did that he was to young to go fight but he became a red cross ambulance driver and before he could finish his training the war ended. He met Ethal Fleming when he was working at a resort on Paw Paw lake. 3 years later he wanted to marry Ethal but his dad said no not unless he had steady employment which within a few days he was selling Lily cups. He was very well dressed and groomed and sold cups to street vendors and at Rigly Stadium and then he went to the Soda fountain and sold them cups which was the best idea and showed them how the cups could be sold and they could sell drinks to go. He sold cups for 16 years and his first daughter was born in 1924. He became the multi mixers exclusive salesman in 1939. And was making about 25,000 a year which was good money. In 1954  he went to California and met Dick and Mac McDonald and they had a resturant which was called McDonalds and required 4 of the multi mixers at a time. It was originally a drive in resturant. They closed the drive in and looked to reinvent  the resturant and they made their kitchen work like a ford assembliy factory and they only had 9 items on their menu and created new things like bigger grills and condiment dispensers. They turned the service time down from 20 mins to 30 seconds.Kroc was 52 when he signed a contract with them that allowed him to use the McDonalds way but when he went home he had to buy out another company which put him severly in debt.In 1959 he opened his first McDonalds. He sold 18 franchises in the first year but was barely making back his money. A secondary business he started was where he would buy the land that McDonalds would be built on and he rented it out and it was critical that he rented these properties where he would ethier get a percent of the profits . He fell in love with another women named Joan and divorced his wife and tryed to get Joan but she wouldnt leave her husband but she wouldnt. A year later he met a women named Jane and married her two weeks later. They scouted locations by flying above the the communities and seeing churches and putting McDonalds near them and they made a manual for the resturants that everyone had to follow. He was very strict about these rules. In 1961 they opened a training station and it was called Hamburger university which taught people how to do everything. Ray started clashing with Dick and Mac and said  i want the company for myself and asked them how much it was gonna cost they said a million each and enough to pay their taxes which ended in being 2.7 million dollars in cash.Kroc didnt buy the brother resturant in the deal which made him angry and then he took them right out of business by building a McDonalds one block away . In 1971 he started selling the fillet o fish then other people started making things like the Big Mac and the Egg McMuffin. They needed someone to attract kids so they made Donald McDonald which was later changed to Ronald McDonald which was a big thing with kids in Washington DC so they spread him around America.McDonalds became the first fast food resturant on the Stock Market. He tryed to get Joan again and on March 8 1986 they got married after divorcing they're spouces.

Good to Great

Level 5 Leadership
Greatness is not a function of circumstance greatness
it turns out is largely a matter of conscious choice

level five leader is humble and fearless...
personal will and personal humilty dont settle for nothing but the best and are humble people
get the right people on the bus in the right seats and the wrong people off the bus

Confront the Brutal Facts
(yet never lose faith)
You absolutely cannot make a series of good decisions without first
confronting the brutal facts

The Stockdale Paradox
Retain Faith that you will prevail in the end regardless of the difficulties
And at the same time confront the most brutal facts of your reality whatever they may be

Dont set dates on things because if they dont happen you get discouraged
when Stockdale was in the Hinoi Hilton prison camp he said the optimists died because
they got discouraged because of saying "we will be out by next christmas" never happened
so this brought them down. So confront the brutal facts and always keep faith and think that
you will get out of your problem and never run away from them confront them head on.

The Hedgehog Concept

What are you the best at in the world
What drives your economic engine
What are you deeply passionate about
Know thyself
A hedge hog conecpt is not a goal to be the best
It is an understanding of what you can be the best at

Know one big thing and stick to it

Which is more important
the goal to be the best at something or realistic understanding
of what you can and cannot be the best at

Can each group and each person have a hedgehog concept?

My Hedge hog concept is...

Be the best fighter in the world
I am passionate about fighting and love it
the rewards and the feel of fighting drive me towards my goal
knowing that i can get rewards for something i love and enjoy.
that is my hedgehog concept.

A  Culture of Discipline

You focus on what you've accomplished relative to exactly what you said you were going to accomplish
- no matter how tough the measure
Should we have a stop doing list ?What should be on the list?

Martha Stewart

Father really pushed her as a child had to make her own clothes. She worked as a model for a little while before she went to the university of columbia then dropped out and got married became a stock broker and learnt how to create a good buisness from clients. She opened her first buisness which was catering weddings.  She has created a giant buisness that grossed over 1.7 billion dollars and had signed a 500 million dollar deal with K-Mart to sell her products.

Key Learning is don't overlook humble beginnings and if your family pushes you to succeed chances are you will succeed and do well for yourself.Try and get a good education and do the things you love otherwise why do them at all if your not going to enjoy it.

Teen Entrepreneur

Brian Wong is a 19 year old Vancouver resident that thinks the future of mobile advertisement isnt on billboards or banners  but in mobile video games.

His company Kiip has secured buisnesses such as Dr Pepper and Sony to name a few to give away prizes
who beat hard levels on video games or get the high score.

Last year he went to San Francisco for a job interview with the website Digg. He was laid off 4 months after getting the job (this was his largest failure to him so far)

This year Kiip has secured 4 million US from investment funding.

Sam Walton

He sold things cheaper then everyone, he never thought of anything except for building up wal mart at one point in time he had the largest fortune in amercia. His fathers job was to evict people from farms who couldnt pay thier bills. Sam Walton was born in 1918.After the first world war his father took the family to Massuri but things only got worse. After seeing his father job and what had happened to them he wanted to make sure he would never be poor. Sam started selling milk after football practice to help with his family. His parents always quarelled , he saved someone from drowning in a lake then became a golden eagle scout (he was in scouts) so he became very popular. In 1936 he entered a college and he started his first paper route which he turned into a small buisness. He started to work at J.C Penny and even got help from J.C Penny when he came to the store once.He tryed to join the army but wasn't able to because of a heart condition but was put on the reserve list.So well waiting to be called to war he got a job in a gun powder factory. He met his wife in the bowling alley then married her on valentines day.He went to war finally but then the war ended the next year he came back and began to start a plan for a buisness .

In 1945 he bought a small store and was confident that he could turn this bad buisness around and he found a way to sell goods for cheaper then other stores then he went out at night to get stock and then have it ready for the money. He thrived on beating the competition and was very good at.Within 3 years he payed off the loan he took from his father then hired his younger brother Bud as assistant manager. The owner of Sam's store wouldnt re-lease his building to Sam because he was jealous of him and wanted the building for his son but Sam didnt give up.

He went to Arkansaw and they moved into Bentinville then bought a store there and he made sure to get a 99 year lease and began to become popular in that town he was part of the towns council. Sam wanted to satisfy America's needs he heard about self service which then let customers could get their own things and then he would have to pay less for staff this was a grand success. In just over 10 years he acquired over 15 stores from arkansaw missori and kansas. He found a new procedure called discounting where he would just buy items straight from the manufacturers. Which once again allowed him to make more money.
He wanted to start his own franchise which then he had to go into debt very large but he knew this would work so he started his first store called Wal-Mart and he began stocking it with what ever he could find so from tools to clothing. It made a million dollars in sales the first year. In 1961 he bought ownership in the bank which then he could loan himself money at the bank. He expanded about 2 stores a year and then he had 18 stores within 6 years. He took his family on month long vacations usually camping to make up for the time he was gone. By 1970 he had 32 stores and his chain was still growing. He was still in debt for over 2 million dollars. He put the store on the stock market for public sale and had to compete against K-Mart.He would walk into competing stores and if he seen a lower price in their store he would call his store and tell them to lower it right now.He opened the profit sharing to all his employees. He had 195 stores by 1975 within a 160 mile radius and soon he was opening about 100 stores a year. In 1983 he was diagnosed with Lukimia and then he took an experimental drug and it worked. Hilliary Clinton worked in Wal-Mart with Sam and he had been friends with Bill Clinton.Unions were trying to unionize Wal-Mart but it was voted down and he also started a buy America campegin which once again boosted Wal-Marts popularity. He became the richest man in America but you would never know if you seen him at home when and then Black Monday came along and he lost 1 and a quarter billion dollars and said its only paper. The Waltons set up a scholarship fun where they sent 150 kids from communist countries to christian schools where they learnt about america and democracy. In 1991 Wal-Mart became the biggest retailer in america. Then in 1992 the president gave him the medal of freedom for his vision and Wal-Mart.He died 6 days after his 74th birthday.

The key idea is always to watch your competitors and to dream big no matter what and never let failure bring you down and make sure that your always humble . His mentors were his father and eventually Bill Clinton even the passion for him began when he seen what his father was doing for work and when he got a taste of buisness thats when the passion of buisness set in with him.

Blue Ocean Strategy

A Blue Ocean Strategy is a buisness idea that is so far out there that there isnt any competetion for it because its never been done and is new and innovative something that combines two things to draw from both crowds an example of this is Cirqu du Solei which combines the circus concept along with theatre which then brings both crowds so if you want to see entertainment that can be creative and intellectual it is perfect along with no one else can pull it off like they can so there is no competietion to worry about. The opposite of this blue ocean is a Red Ocean which is an ocean of all the same types of buisnesses which just undercut each other and try to win customers with prices and nothing new and innovative as though they are just trapped in the harbor and can only come up with simple ideas and attack other companies resulting in red in the water people that can achieve a blue ocean are thinking outside of the harbor using big ideas and are very creative. A Red Ocean company could be Coca-Cola and Pepsi which are practically the same drink and just undercut each other.

The Six Principals of the Blue Ocean Strategy are
1:Reconstruct Market Boundries
which is just doing things that aren't typical for that brand of product or buisness
2:Focus On The Big Picture Not The Numbers
Always focus on making your idea more innovative and less about how much money you can make from it and dont get lost in statistics
3:Reach Beyond Existing Demand
Think about future customers and not just about now
4:Get the Strategic Sequence Right
Think about the things that make a product work and its not just about creating something new and not being able to sell it but think about how much you can make it for who will buy it things like  this.
5:Overcome Key Orginizational Hurdels
Make good excutive desicions and dont over use resources when you dont have them make sure everyone is in a comfortable situation to some extent and be orginized
6:Build Execution into Strategy
You need to create trust in the company you have and have trust with all participants because a blue ocean strategy has a fair sized risk and everyone needs to know they might not acheive the full potential of a blue ocean strategy

Shark Tank-Mr.Todds Pies

He sells over 300 000 pies a day and people line up for pies and he made some bad desicions when he was younger and now is out on 3 bank loans and requires assistance to keep the buisness going. $460k for 10% of his company. $850 dollars in sale last year making 20% revenue. He cant keep up with the demand so he needs assistance. Sweet potatoe pie represents 94% of the Wholesale revenue generated. He says 300k will go towards output facilities so he can ship pies to companies that are demanding them and the other 100k will go towards Street teams as he says which will advertise pies more so to the community. Wholesale 50% Retail 50% . The first time he started to big and to fast and got in debt and spent 4 months living in his car. McDonalds wants to put little kiosks in their stores selling his pies. The sharks are offering his want but for half his company and he took the offer because it would save his buisness and then he would have what he wanted  along with expert advice and people who are in it to make money. I think it was a good idea because he now has experts that are there for him both as mentors and as finacial backups so sure he gave away half his buisness but it wasnt to people who arent looking to improve it. So the 2 sharks got 25% each of the company.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold is Austrian he came to America  with only a gym bag. He is from Tal Austria born in 1947 . He lived in a house with no heat or refridgerator. Arnold's dad was the chief of police and was a perfectionist and supported atheletic compitions and often he favoured Arnolds brother rather then Arnold. At the age 15 Arnold wanted to be the best body builder and in the start he had a low pain tolerence and he had to substatute pain for pleasure. He built body mass much faster then other people. After becoming a body builder champ he wanted to go into movies. Arnold went to the gym 6 times a week and even broke a window to work out on a sunday his father only let  him go to Gras to train 3 times a week so he built a gym at home. He always liked to laugh. from 15 to 18 he was content with the gym and then had to go into the army for a one year service but he went awal to go compete in a body building show were he got the best score 300 and then tryed to sneak back in but was thrown in jail for 7 days. After that his high ups made him a company hero and told him to continue training. He went to london in 1966 to compete in the Mr.Universe competion and took 2nd that year. Every time he did a rep he felt like he was getting a step closer to his goal. At the age of 20 he won the Mr. Universe he is the youngest man to  have won it and when he got on stage he brought a feeling to others like what were they doing there because he had so much confidence he would make them feel like they were losers. Once he got to America he tryed his first American Mr.Universe and got 2nd place which made him so sad but from there on he said he would never lose again. He went to Gold's Gym  and actually started his own mail order buisness. Joe Wheater was his mentor and helped Arnold with his first buisness and his body building techniques.Arnold told Joe that he had to have more Joy in his life other wise he wouldn't enjoy it. When Arnold worked at the gym he made everyone elses energy rise and made their workout better. Arnold won his first IFFB in new york then took 2nd in Mr.Olympia and then Arnold came back the next year and took first and held it for 6 years. Back in Austria his brother died in a car crash then his father died from a stroke. He started to fund the body building competions well Jim orginized it. At 28 he was the undisputed Body Bulding champion of the world. Arnold's first film was Hercules goes to New York which wasn't that good.He was told he would never make it because of his name accent and build but he didnt give up and kept trying and took acting lessons. He won a golden globe for best newcomer . He had a back up plan if the movie career didnt work out he wouldnt buy and sell realestate. Arnold married JFK's niece. Arnold's wife showed him the special olympics which her parents had founded and he gladly made apperances at many of them. He got his first lead role is as Conan and took acting roles. After Conan he was offered the role of the Terminator and he was contemplating to do it or not but in the end he took it and it made him extremely popular. He became more of a working class hero then a mythic movie god which was better for him. by 1985 he was named international star of the year.He married his wife Maria on a row boat on a little lake  in Austria well they were visiting his mother. After the honeymoon he flew down to Mexico to film Predator which got him the lead box office role again. He wanted a more challenging role that wasnt just shooting and grunting but actual acting which he eventually got. The best talent he has is to learn and he continues to learn all the time.He travelled to all 50 states to promote physical fitness in schools.Arnold hasn't been changed by mega sucess and is a very humble and down to earth person.

The things i learned from Arnold are to never give up even when you are told you can't do it.Never let sucess go to your head and always try and be humble.Along with you can always keep learning no matter how old you are and when ever a new challenge presents itself you can do it you just need to make the challenge fit your personality and skills.Arnold is a very insparational person and a great role model.

    John.D.Rockeffeller

He wrote down what he spent and saved everyday which resulted in helping him become wealthy .This will make you a millionaire if you do this properly. John.D.Rockeffeller became the world's first billionaire he was an oil mogul and was pretty ruthless around buisness.John has always wanted to be different then his father and liked order and to try and control uncontrollable things. He recorded everything he spent because recording it makes you realize how valueable money actually is. ( this was called Ledger A)
Rockeffeller thought it was better to refine oil then mine it because oil drys out but some one always needs their oil refiined. After awhile of running the oil refining buisness he tryed to cut out middle men and save money where ever possible even with making their own barrels the workers started using 40 drops of sodder then Rockeffeller got them to try 38 but it didnt work then he said 39 it worked then later on in life he said he saved a fortune.
He would offer other smaller companies stock instead of just buying them out but if they didnt except he would just pressure them out of the oil game.He told them that they would make more money with him then by themselves which was true. John.D.Rockeffeller established a college  for black women in the late 1800's which was quite amazing and he did it because he thought it was the right thing. He felt a sense of resposibility to use is money for good.Standard Oil got spilt into a bunch of smaller companies and he owned a portion of 34 different companies which were still all very powerful in the oil buisness. He handed out dimes to people which if some one got one of these dimes it was classified a collectible item. John.D.Rockeffeller Jr also had a ledger which he started at a young age.  He was also frugal just like his father and you are more likely much more successful if you are frugal.Rockeffeller Jr. stopped working at the firm and started to spend money on good things like education and juvinielle deliquancy.    After the miners started to rebel in Colarado the federale troops were brought in and 75 miners died in the massacre of Ludlow so Jr went there and spent time with the miners and their families to show them that they are important to him. After the death of Rockeffeller Sr. , Jr wanted to make the Rockeffeller name to be a good symbol so he gave money to many different orginaztions and he helped keep and preserve nature by funding national parks and protecting them. This made him and the Rockeffeller name much more popular with the public. Jr's wife started the Museum of Modern art with some other wealthy women and eventually Jr donated millions into it. When he died he was remebered as the great philanthropest and a great man not a tyrant or a bad public person which was what he strived for to be known as a good man. The family's net worth is estimated to be 5.5 billion dollars.

What i learnt from the Rockefffellers is the value of money is better realized when you record how much you make and being frugal can help you end up a millionaire . Along with Richard Branson being good to the people who work for you and donating money can make you a better person in peoples eyes and its always a good thing to use extensive wealth for good.

    Buisness Guidlines

Here  are some guidelines that can be used for a buisness
"First to know , first to handle." So first person in a buisness to hear about it should try and solve it first rather then handing it off
a stat that is helpfull is : an unhappy customer will tell 10 people about a problem while a satisfied customer will tell only four people about a good experience.
These are some guidelines Richard Branson owner of Virgin mobile companies etc. uses to run his many buisnesses

    Richard Branson

Richard Branson is the owner of the chain of Virgin companies he has about 40 plus companies which is insane for one man to have created and started all of these companies. The comapanies he owns varies from Virgin Vodka to Virgin Cosmetics which is quite a big difference. He says that if you can run one company you can run any company and he said that life is one long learning process and enjoys taking risks. He sold the 4th biggest record company in the world to keep his airlines alive and protect the jobs of the people in Virgin Airlines. The total revenue of the Virgin companies is 25 billion and the amount of employes is 55,000
He was knighted for help producing the sex pistols song god save the queen 25 years later. He also is the first man to produce a public space program where people can fly up into space on a Virgin space ship this new companies name is called Virgin Gallactic. He was very bad at school and didnt even complete school he left at 15 years old. He learnt the difference between Net income and Gross when he was 50 years old.His mother made him find his own way to his grandmas house 5 miles away when he was a young age around 4.He has been to jail once or twice for what he said were ancient laws one which involves saying something about diseases and the other time he nearly went to jail was for saying bullock on the Sex Pistols album. He thinks the best way to deal with people is fairly and nicely. He also likes to upset status quo's so taking on challenges. Family is extremly important to him and spends 3 months with them  minimum.
Some things he has said and put money into are :
    Extreme Wealth = Extreme Responsibility
Prize : for extracting carbon out of the atmosphere and methane out of the atmosphere.
WarRoom:Sovle African problems and social problems.
It's important that people with wealth use it for good things and it wouldn't be good if they used it for bad things

In summary this man is successful because he has learnt how to overcome adversity and solve problems his own way . He knows how to treat people with respect and then people respect him.
Small is beautiful all of his companies that he has invested in are small companies of only 400 people or he has started small companies then let someone else run them

So from Richard i learnt how treating people better will make your buissness experience much better and that it leads to success to always try new things and take risks (leap in to the unknown) and live life at its fullest.

    24 Hour Rule

The 24 hour rule is a way to lead your life by to some extent . The concept of this rule is if you confront someone during the day and you have a problem with something they said or did you have 24 hours to confront them otherwise you dont have an opinion on that subject after 24 hours. This is the 24 hour rule and i am excited to try this out myself :)

    Stock Tracking

Today i started tracking a company of my choice. I have picked General Electric because they make microwaves and without mircowaves cooking would be a longer and more difficult task and they also were the creators of the minigun. They create many household appliances such as stoves and microwaves and their market cap (which is how much money the comapny is worth) is 221.23 billion dollars.I think General Electric's stocks will increase over time slowly because there is a constant need for household appliances like microwaves etc.
